Osoyoos

The southernmost town in the Okanagan, pretty Osoyoos benefits from the warmest weather in Canada, extensive agricultural region, and beautiful Osoyoos Lake.

Despite its proximity to the US border, Osoyoos is definitely Canadian –warm and welcoming, and with a vibrant spirit! The pretty Main Street runs along the shores of Osoyoos Lake, and lush vineyards and orchards stretch up the hillsides to the east and west. Dramatic peaks and stark, desert mesas overlook the valley. With around 7000 residents (and more, in the summer months!), Osoyoos offers everything one might want in a small town, along with an individualistic quirkiness that adds to its appeal.

There’s a wonderful sense of community in Osoyoos; it’s in the neighbourly atmosphere, the well-utilized public facilities and outdoor spaces, and the multiple opportunities to get involved. Families appreciate the close-knit, strong schools. The easily-walkable downtown has restaurants, cafés, galleries, unique shops, a great farmer’s market, and plenty of urban amenities. As a popular resort town, Osoyoos has a high number of excellent dining options, found in the hotels and surrounding wineries. It’s an agricultural place at heart, and local, innovative farm-to-table fare is readily accessible, here.

Osoyoos residents take pride in living a healthy lifestyle. Yoga studios, wellness centres, health food stores, and gyms abound. Active living is easy here, too –with its perfect climate, Osoyoos is a four-season outdoor playground. Locals (and visitors!) enjoy world-class golf courses, excellent, all-season hiking and biking trails, and winter activities at nearby Mt. Baldy. The beautiful parks and beaches along Canada’s warmest lake make it easy to pursue water sports of all kinds.

For more relaxed recreational activities, Osoyoos offer some unique options. Spotted Lake is a favourite with locals, and the MuseumOsoyoos Desert Centre, and Nk’Mmip Desert Cultural Centre offer informative looks into the history and natural landscape of the area. The Osoyoos Desert Model Railroad is a beloved local attraction, and just another way in which the people of Osoyoos showcase their individuality. But…you can’t talk about Osoyoos without talking about the wine! The incredible soil of the Golden Mile and the Black Sage Bench make Osoyoos a star of the Canadian wine scene. Dozens of incomparable wineries are on the doorstep, here.

But where do people live? Very popular with retirees and seasonal residents, Osoyoos has a booming condo market. There are several shared-amenity strata developments overlooking the lake, that offer freestanding houses and multi-unit buildings. More traditional single-family homes can be found in established neighbourhoods near the town centre, and many Osoyoos residents live (and work) on rural agricultural properties in the outlying areas. At Anarchist Mountain, and beyond, recreational properties are plentiful.

There are so many things about Osoyoos that make it attractive to residents and visitors, alike! True, Canadian charm, ideal weather, and picture-perfect vistas make this a lovely place to live, all year round.
